2010 Olympic Games

Today marks the beginning of the one year countdown till the opening of the 2010 Vancouver Whistler Winter Olympic Games. In communities and at venue locations across the Greater Vancouver and Whistler areas people got together to celebrate how far everything has come and what to look forward to.

In West Vancouver for example there were celebrations featuring school children and even an appearance from the official Vancouver 2010 Olympic mascots.

The run-up to the Olympic Games in Vancouver-Whistler in 2010 has not been one without trouble. The athlete’s village saw the private builder run out of funds due to the credit crunch and the City of Vancouver had to pick up the tab at the expense of taxpayers, and the estimates for the security costs are starting to come in around $1 billion dollars.

Still people are getting excited and we must remember every Olympic Games has had their troubles but the people of Vancouver and Canada will still put on a tremendous show for the world.

Today also saw the release of the design of the torch for the torch relay. The torch relay will take 106 days and begins on October 30 in Victoria, British Columbia. Weighing about one and half kilograms, there will be a total of 12,000 torches made – one for each lucky torchbearer. The 2010 torch relay will be the longest domestic relay in Olympic history.
