Canada’s first medal of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games was won by moguls skier Jennifer Heil of Spruce Grove, Alberta. Young Canadian Chloe Dufour-Lapointe finished fifth just outside the medals. The event saw Americans finish first and third to start off their Olympics on a good note.
The first full day was to be a big one for Canada as downhill skier Manny Osborne-Paradis of North Vancouver, British Columbia was expected to finish with a medal as well but the wet weather had other plans. The weather leading up to the 2010 Games was warm and wet and the start of the Olympic Games has been much the same. The men’s downhill event was postponed as the course was far too wet to go ahead.
Another venue that should see many medals for Canada is the short-track speed skating oval in Richmond. Olivier Jean of Lachenaie, Quebec finished fourth in the men’s 1500-metre short-track speed skating event held on Saturday night.
Many Canadians are hoping these fourth place finishes are not a trend that will be continued. While there is no shame in finishing fourth in the world, these games Canadians coast to coast were hoping for more with the ‘Own the Podium’ program.
