2010 Olympic Games

The Winter Games in Vancouver 2010 will see the most technically adept yet brutally competitive matchup in years, due to equivalence of professional training and elite world cup standings. Curling style has evolved to a sliding gait over the ice following the toss while two brushing players smooth the ice in front if the slowly rolling curling stone.

Curling began as a rural sport in the Scottish highlands, where concentrated effort to project the stone across ice to a specific sphere began. Heavy stones were culled from river bottoms and used as dead weights delicately shoved across the ice to a specific barrier or area. The combination of teams to alternate throwing formed the game into a sport.

Both women and men compete in Olympic level curling for trophy positions amongst some of the world’s best athletes. Single gender and mixed doubles curling teams have developed fans from athletes long prized in international competition. Sweepers and skips can assist the throwers in team play to condition ice immediately before the curling stone rolls over it, but individual or doubles play the thrower may have to chase after their own stone.

Like the summer games discuss toss, the winter sport of curling balances thrown torque across ice versus velocity in air and wind over distance. Team play means four players compete in the ten ends of curling play. Many national teams such as Switzerland, the United States, Denmark, Scotland, and other winter nations lay proud claim to many trophy and championship wins in curling.

Throwing order per player is limited, teams cannot feature any player as simply a thrower only. Curling is similar to archery in that long periods of concentration and physical precision are required, with immediacy and skill in even and reliable amounts. Throwing curling stones is a calculated gambit combining skill and knowledge of geometry. Opposing strategy may change during the game and adaptation to that must be addressed.

Fans can see dream matchups of throwing strategy and curling skill in mixed doubles and men’s and women’s curling sport play. Complimentary players with throwing and hitting styles can succeed in defensive or offensive strategy.

Mixed doubles is a way for team members to match up against strategic teaming of the best players from other countries teams. The best English sweeper may be a woman, the best curling thrower may be a man. Mixed doubles allows for incredible skill combinations to match dream mixed doubles teams in curling from other countries to match skill and concentrated strategy.

Curling in the Winter Games is decidedly a winter sport, though summer conditions can be matched with technological adaptation for training. The technique of curling in the format of curling stones with stacked stones in the target area combines dynamics of pool with hockey.

The polished stone with handles spells disaster or glee as it travels mere centimeters at decreasing speed through the target. The tenor of any match can change as rocks get thrown out of the house or curling shots requiring assistance are underserved. Ends can be ten ends for team play or eight ends in doubles or singles. A “rock” rule can be established describing removal of stones from the play area after so many ends.

Curling game strategy can begin by placement of the curling stones well within the target area. But succeeding players can propel their curling stones into the same place and knock them out of target point qualifying position. A final round throw directly into the central target area can score the final deciding point. This makes for exciting, high tension curling play for spectators and teams.

I have surprised myself and begun to get interested in curling by watching the olympics in Vancover. On first sight it looked like a shorter and sweet version of bowling but now I discover it has all the calculations of a game of chess. At the moment I am getting as much as I can on the matches from the Net. Then next stop will be ascertaining someplace to have a go like the nearby ice rink.
