It has been a long time in the making but the time has almost arrived. The 2010 Winter Olympic Games are almost upon us and all Canadians will soon be rallying behind their athletes as they take on the world’s best.
There have been many problems along the way including cost-overruns, problematic legislation and a question as to how much it will all cost once added up – but if there is one place in Canada that can handle the pressure and put on a show for the world it is Whistler. Vancouver is a city that is known around the world and is a top tourist destination, but here, much of the focus will be on the resort town of Whistler.
The Sea-to-Sky has undergone needed upgrades and is now much safer than before and it should be able to handle the massive surge in traffic. Towns like Lions Bay and Squamish stand to gain much from the Olympics as they are both right on the path between Vancouver and Whistler.
The road system around Vancouver will be tested as it can barely handle the normal flow of traffic on an average day. There are some who don’t want to see the Olympics in town because of some of the policies surrounding the games and the organizers. There will be protests during these games but the security presence will be immense so it’s doubtful beyond the evening news that most tourists will even know.
Canada should claim more medals in these Winter Olympic games. Some areas like downhill skiing though have been hit hard short of the games in terms of injuries. A few medal contenders for Canada will be sitting on the sidelines cheering on their teammates and countrymen. The speed skating oval in Richmond should be the site of the largest collection of medals for Canada.
The weather is always a bit of a wild card in this part of Canada. It could undergo a long warming trend and the ski conditions may be poor, or the perfect conditions may arise – we’ll just have to wait another month to know for sure. Either way these 2010 Winter Olympic Games will highlight both Whistler and Vancouver to the world and show Canada to the world.
