Evan Lysacek is coached by the formidable Frank Carroll, and the authority shows in every step. Competing at the senior level since 2003, except for Plushenko’s re-entry into competition Lysacek would have been the grand old man of th Vancouver 2010 event. Lysacek owns a graceful, expansive style which translates into technical prowess at his best and sub-gold placement at worst. Yet the United States national in men’s figure skating included untoward errors not typical of Lysacek’s banner year in Grand Prix of Figure Skating ISU events.
A handsome, dark tall skater, Lysacek employs every inch of his long frame towards spectacularly lyrical skating form. Yet for the critical event of possibly his entire career, Lysacek changed up his program design to a more avante garde motif more synonymous with Johnny Weir. The less than optimum style didn’t sit wholly well on his shoulders and mistakes were made. These errors in styling and less than optimum choreography lessened Lysacek’s impact at a crucial time in the eyes of judges: next to Johnny Weir’s outrageous stylings Jeremy Abbott looked not only the conservative choice but the best performing and most balanced overall.
Evan Lysacek should be skating to routines that make the most of his Casanova looks, but instead he is trying to vy with Weir in the costume department, an obvious error for the USA nationals. If Lysacek skates either of his nationals routines, he can’t forsee victory. but the crowd pleasing hometown Worlds win routine he performed in 2009 can win the day as it showcases all his skills and smooth presentation without falling short of technical stacking of the jumps and spins. Lysacek has the lines to win, and the crowd appeal, he just needs to change his costume back to a tuxedo and get out there.
Vancouver Olympics Placement Estimation:
Lysacek needs to revert to more successful and well received public performance styles form his past victories, namely the 2009 worlds. International judges may underscore the weird new choreography and styling which notably not Lysacek’s best Olympic foot forward. At his best with classic elegant expression and capable jumping in the technical sphere Olympics competition requires, Evan Lysacek needs to deliver a bravura, career best routine he himself feels comfortable with. With the crowd behind him, Lysacek could threaten Plushenko or earn silver for sure.
Dream Routine: A Rudolph Valentino romantic spoof.
