2010 Olympic Games, News, Vancouver

The 2010 Winter Olympic men’s hockey team for Canada has dodged a bullet with their win over Germany in the qualification round. After losing to the United States, Canada needed the win or they went home. Such as loss would have rocked the hockey world.

The Canadian team was lucky to beat the hard-charging Swiss team in a shoot-out and while they did outplay the American side for most of the game they were not able to beat the US goalie when it counted most. Martin Brodeur started in goal and looked a bit shaky at the start of the game and was beaten on shots that he normally would have stopped.

Canadians from coast to coast were beginning to sweat that our game at our Olympics was not going to end in a gold medal as all expected. Hockey pundits knew the games would be close and that the US would present problems for the Canadian side, but to lose the game was another matter.

Canada now faces Russia in the quarter finals. The winner goes on to the semi-final round for a chance at a medal. Canada’s women’s hockey team is steamrolling their way to gold and it seems little will get in their way. The only squad remotely close to them is the American team but it looks like gold on the women’s side is more assured than on the men’s.
